Enjoy this combination machine’s expansive jointing capabilites, then change it over quickly for planing without removing the fence.

If you have a modestly sized shop where every square foot of floor space counts, a combination jointer/planer machine like this JET JPJ-12BHH could make loads of sense for your lumber surfacing needs. That's because it piggybacks a 12"-wide jointer on top of a 12" planer, yet its welded-steel cabinet occupies a footprint of under 4 square feet. The duo enables you to face-joint stock as wide as you can plane.

JET equips the jointer with a pair of heavy-duty cast-iron tables that have a ground finish to deliver accuracy and flatness. They're parallelogram style, in order to maintain a close distance to the cutterhead and to allow precise depth-of-cut adjustments. The overall jointer table length is a respectable 55".

Hinging the jointer up on its side presents the machine's second function as a 12" planer. The planer shares the same motor, cutterhead and dust shroud as the jointer and can plane stock up to 8-3/4" thick.

Unlocking a knob and hinging the jointer up on its side presents the machine's 12"-wide planer underneath. It can be made ready for planing by simply flipping a dust shroud over and into position. The planer's bed is cast-iron and measures 25" long.

Jet jpj-12bhh jointer table
JET's JPJ-12BHH offers 12" of jointing capacity in a compact package. A dedicated 12" jointer from most competitors would cost about the same or even more than this dual-purpose machine.

The JPJ-12BHH powers both surfacing machines with a 3hp TEFC single-phase induction motor, wired for 230 volts. It spins the 2-3/4"-diameter cutterhead at 5,300 rpm for either jointing or planing, and it drives a two-speed gearbox that enables the planer to feed stock through at 16 or 26 feet per minute.

In terms of maximum capacities, the jointer can remove up to 1/8" of stock per pass, and the planer can be set to a maximum cutting depth of 5/32". You can plane stock up to 8-3/4" thick.

A 5-7/8"-tall, 43-1/4"-long aluminum fence on the jointer helps to ensure that wide workpieces can be edge-jointed accurately. It has preset stops for 90 and 45 degrees, or set and lock the fence to any angle in between. It pivots with the jointer and need not be removed for planing.

The machine's 4" dust port will help make either jointing or planing operations cleaner. JET recommends that at least 550 cubic feet per minute of dust collection draw be connected for optimal efficiency.

Two Cutterhead Options

Jet jointer helical cutterhead
A helical cutterhead, outfitted with 42 replaceable carbide inserts, ensures smooth surfaces with minimal tearout when jointing or planing. They are easy to maintain and stay sharp for an impressively long time.

This 453 lb combination machine actually comes in two model options, which differ only in terms of their cutterhead styles. The JPJ-12BHH has a helical cutterhead with 42 four-sided carbide inserts. When they dull or get nicked, each insert need only be loosened and pivoted to a fresh edge, then tightened down again. No additional indexing is required.

JET also offers a JPJ-12B model. It has a conventional cutterhead outfitted with three high-speed steel straight knives. They're held in place with gib screws and must be indexed when they're removed for sharpening or replacement.
