Few joints are as strong as a wedged through-tenon. When used in Windsor chair construction, such joints remain tight over time, and even get tighter with use instead of working loose. These simple reamers make it easy to create the tapered mortises that result in a solid fit, with no racking. Simply drill a conventional hole, then use the reamer to shape the inside of the hole to fit tapered leg, arm or back slat tenons for wedged-tenon construction.
Tapered Reamer Details:
- Cleanly removes material to taper straight through-holes to fit wedged tenons—common in chairmaking, where the wedged joint tends to get tighter and stronger over time
- Small reamer is 3-3/8'' long overall, tapering from 3/16'' diameter at the tip up to 3/4''
- Large reamer is 5-1/2'' long overall, tapering from 3/16'' diameter at the tip up to 1-3/16''
- Small reamer is great for tapering holes for seat-back spindles, while large reamer is ideal for tapering larger holes for chair legs
- 5/16'' hex shanks—use in a handheld drill or in a hand brace equipped with a modern 3-jaw chuck
- Made from durable high-speed steel
- If using with a power drill, maintain a low drilling speed
NOTE: Designed for use in an electric drill, these reamers may also be used in a brace if it is equipped with a modern 3-jaw chuck.
