Lignum Vitae is generally accepted to be the hardest wood in the world. Its hardness and rot-resistance have been attested to by its use as propellor shaft bearings in old ships. For general woodworking, this hardness makes it difficult to work with, but on the lathe, the same hardness makes it turn beautifully, and it takes an excellent finish.
