Video: Measuring Dust Ports & Dust Hoses

Even the best dust collectors won't be effective if the dust hoses don't properly fit the tool dust ports. One of the easiest ways to make sure you always have the right hose connector for each tool is to measure the inside and outside diameter of each tool port and connector. This may seem like an obvious tip, but a lot of woodworkers don't take the time to measure and they often grab the wrong size hose and dust collection fittings

Speaker: Even the best dust collector systems won't work well if your dust hoses don't properly fit the dust ports on your tools. The key to getting the perfect fit is knowing the inside and outside diameter of your dust ports and hoses. This may sound obvious but many people never take the time to measure. In many cases the dust hose will fit over the tool port. So, the outside diameter of the tool port needs to match the inside diameter of the dust hose.
In this case, the outside diameter of the dust port on this table saw is four inches and the inside diameter of this hose is four inches. It's snug but that's a perfect fit. It's also a good idea to label everything after you measure it, especially as your collection of tools and fittings grows and on the smaller hoses that are tougher to tell apart. So, take a minute and measure the inside and outside diameter of your dust ports and hose connectors. Making sure they fit properly is a key factor in getting an effective dust collection.
