JOINTER PLANES
The long sole of the No. 7 Jointing Plane – around 22" long – can span high spots on uneven stock, allowing it to trim off the peaks with progressive cuts to gradually flatten the edges of a workpiece. Also are known as try planes, jointing planes are a specialized tool geared toward woodworkers who mill a fair amount of stock by hand.
In practice, any bench plane can be used to joint an edge straight so long as the board is no more than three times the length of the sole.
